Disasters don’t strike following a schedule. In fact, most disasters happen during the most inconvenient times, such as in the small hours of the night. Still, it pays to be prepared. Storm damage and roof restoration specialist Dynasty Restoration Inc. shares five tips to mitigate the damage brought on by floods.

Mitigation Strategies: 3 Tips to Reduce Flood Damage

1. Be Aware of the Flood Risk

Your neighborhood may be at risk of flooding without your knowledge. To confirm whether there’s reason to be concerned, consult your local authorities for the flood map of your community. Knowing whether your area is prone to floods will enable you to prepare accordingly.

2. Move Appliances and Furniture

It might be a good idea to relocate your appliances and furniture to a higher ground where water can’t reach them. Heavy equipment which cannot be lifted easily can be wrapped up with a polyethylene film to keep silt from getting inside. Note that the film will not prevent water from entering. It will, at the very least, make the clean-up easier. In any case, you can call in storm damage services. Remember to disconnect gas-fueled appliances from the gas line and to shut off the gas source and electrical breakers.

Never stand in the water while trying to shut off the electricity. If you must, you can use a long pole, or you can stand on a material that doesn’t conduct electricity, such as a wooden or plastic crate.

3. Prepare to Evacuate

There will be times when evacuation is the only solution, especially when the waters are continuously rising to dangerous levels. In this situation, it’s best to know which routes are the safest to take and where to go once you’ve evacuated. Make sure every member of the household is aware of the evacuation plan. Work out special considerations for disabled persons or pets.
