Spotting hail damage does not always require that you replace your entire roof, but it is important to know what type of damage your roof has taken after a hailstorm. Here’s how to identify hail damage depending on your roofing material.

Asphalt Shingle

Hail damage can affect either material lifespan and efficiency, or be purely cosmetic, such as causing premature discoloration or fading of the asphalt shingle. Hail can create both types of damage on asphalt shingles. Shingles may lose their density or crack or chip from hailstone impact, which will leave your underlayment exposed to the weather, including water. Check for granules in your downspouts after a hailstorm just as you would after any storm.

Metal

Hail doesn’t usually scratch metal, but it can show indentations typically smaller than the hailstone that has hit it. These dents are usually half the size in diameter of the hailstone that landed on it.

Gutters are usually made of a type of metal, aluminum. Check your gutters after a storm. Aluminum is softer than the average metal roof and will usually show indentation marks as well.

Wood Shakes

Wood can split with hailstone impact, with the impact marks from the hailstones discernible along the split itself. Because wood roofs need more maintenance, it is always wise to get an inspection after a hailstorm. At Dynasty Restoration Inc., we can identify hail damage and other possible problems.
