It always pays to be informed about certain aspects of your home, such as your roofing system and the different elements that can damage it. Here are three things that you should know about wind damage and what it does to your roofing shingles.
Defining Wind Damage
Wind damage pertains to any extent or level of destruction to any property caused by winds, regardless of the intensity. Since wind patterns can be pretty difficult to spot, predicting the damage that strong winds can do may also be challenging. But generally speaking, wind damage targets the corners and edges since these areas don’t have enough support as the other portions on your roof. Shingles are especially susceptible to wind damage because they have more areas through which wind can pass.
Fact #1: Wind Damage Isn’t Just Due to Wind Strength.
Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t exactly the strong winds that cause wind and storm damage on shingle roofs. Instead, what causes holes, dents, cracks and scratches on your roof are usually debris and other easily windswept objects. These objects can include plants, lawn furniture and other items that haven’t been sufficiently secured prior to the storm. Top culprits also include fallen tree limbs.
Fact #2: It Isn’t Just the Wind That Causes Missing Shingles.
It’s important to note that shingle adhesive failure can occur even without the presence of strong winds. Keeping this in mind, shingles that weren’t adhered properly fall under a different category of damage and are most probably a breach of the manufacturing or labor warranty. The patterns of roof damage due to inadequate shingle adhesion are different from those of wind damage. Needless to say, improperly adhered shingles can fall off even without strong winds.
Fact #3: Not All Insurance Policies Cover Wind Damage.
Wind damage can be tricky to spot and differentiate from other types of damage. This is why not all insurance policies cover wind damage. However, if you do have wind damage coverage, your insurance company is legally obliged to shoulder the roofing repair or replacement expenses, whichever costs less.
